2017 Comic-Con is Almost Here!

Like the line of people in the photo below, the 2017 Comic-Con International is around the corner! Hordes of zombies, princesses, and caped crusaders will soon be invading our town (more specifically, the San Diego Convention Center) on July 20th – 23rd. This event has been taking place in San Diego since 1973, when a group of science fiction, comic book, and movie fans organized a comic book convention. Since that inaugural year, which drew about 100 attendees, Comic-Cons have had attendance exceeding 130,000! These devotees flock to San Diego annually, and are treated to sneak peeks of upcoming science-fiction and fantasy movies, shows, and literature.

Our True Photography headquarters is just 5 blocks from the Convention Center, so we get to see all the attendees as they pass by! In anticipation of this year’s Comic-Con, here are highlights from last year’s event.

During this time of year, we arrive to find people lined up around our building, waiting to buy collectible figurines from Funko. We love watching the crowds from our studio, which is a floor above the Funko storefront :)

Best Coast Beer Fest

Spring is getting closer, which means it’s almost time for the Best Coast Beer Fest in Embarcadero Park! This festival takes place near our San Diego studio, and showcases over 200 varieties of beer and cider. There are nearly 100 West Coast craft breweries represented, with beautiful views of the surrounding bayfront and Downtown San Diego. During the event, attendees can mingle with local brewers, sample craft brews, and browse merchandise from artisan vendors. Participants can also grab a bite at Food Truck Alley, relax in the sun, or burn off calories at a lawn game nearby. 

This year’s festival takes place on Saturday, March 11th, 2017, with General Admission from 2-5pm, and live performances throughout the day. The event benefits Cancer for College, which was founded by two-time cancer survivor and double amputee Craig Pollard. Craig’s charity has provided nearly $2 million in scholarships to over a thousand people around the country! So while enjoying a tasty craft brew, you can also be helping others :)

Clash at Clairemont with Tony Hawk

Over the weekend, we attended the Clash at Clairemont fundraiser as a guest of Tony Hawk, where we photographed him and the day’s activities. Along with Tony Hawk, the event featured legendary skateboarders such as Andy MacDonald, Bob Burnquist, and Ryan Sheckler. Guests of the packed event were treated to showcases by these world-class skaters, as well as live music by bands such as Agent Orange.

In addition to being an exciting day, the Clash at Clairemont event was for a great cause. Proceeds went to support the Mission Valley YMCA / Krause Family Bike and Skatepark, an action sports facility here in San Diego. A donation was also presented to Grind for Life, an organization founded by life-long skateboarder Mike Rogers after his second battle with sarcoma cancer. All in all, it was an amazing event, and a fun chance to see skate masters in action.
