After writing blogs about so many awesome engagement shoots and weddings, it’s time to share the story of my own big day!  About two years ago, my now-husband and I went on a life-changing adventure around the world on the CBS reality show, The Amazing Race 15.  Being chosen for the Amazing Race was always a dream of ours, and we feel so fortunate to have won the whole thing. Only a few months after winning, we were engaged. We knew exactly who we wanted to photograph our once-in-lifetime celebration – True Photography!  And the story gets better… not long after hiring True for our wedding day, True Photography hired me onto the team! I absolutely love working with all of our brides and grooms, and sharing their weddings on our blog.

Check out the January cover 2012 cover of Exquisite Weddings Magazine to see one of our favorite photos by True Photography! I hope you enjoy the recap of my wedding at the Hard Rock Hotel. Feel free to let us know what you think!

Cheyne and I knew from the beginning that we wanted our wedding to be a party. We wanted our guests to feel like this was an all-out celebration of “Team Meghan and Cheyne!” We chose the Hard Rock because we felt that it was a contemporary venue that optimizes the “rock star” party atmosphere that we were going for.  We stuck to a color palate of dark blues, shades of gray and a touch of white. I wore a Romona Keveza dress and the bouquets by Blush Botanicals were beautiful with white peonies and anemones with deep blue centers.

We’ve always loved the Beatles, and because our wedding was at the Hard Rock, we incorporated a music theme throughout the festivities. We hinted at the Beatles in our invitations, which were screen printed with guitars and tied with “All you need is love” tags.  There was even a Beatles guitar pick tab on the inside of the invites. We also played “All You Need is Love” as the recessional song during our ceremony. And of course, we couldn’t leave the Hard Rock without Aaron getting a great shot of us in front of the Abbey Road wall.

Cheyne and I were born and raised in San Diego, and have been friends ever since elementary school.  San Diego was an easy choice for the location of our wedding, but we wanted it to be in an energetic atmosphere that was representative of us.  We chose the rooftop of the Hard Rock Hotel, overlooking the buzzing downtown crowds during a Padres game at Petco Park, in the heart of the Gaslamp.

We also wanted to somehow represent our adventures on the reality show at our wedding.  We had clay characters made of us in our backpacks and outfits that we wore on the show to top our cake from Sweet Cheeks Bakery! The escort cards were mini passports that lead guests to their tables, which were named after locations we traveled to on the Race, along with a picture of us completing a challenge. Not to mention, six of the 18 members of our bridal party were contestants we competed against on the show, and have now become friends for life!

To add to the party atmosphere, a custom monogram dance floor and dramatic draping was set up in the Legends Ballroom by Concepts Event Design.  Also, Tim Altbaum Productions amped up the excitement with tons of uplighting, a light show, and a video DJ that allowed guests to watch music videos on the big screen as they danced the night away.  Our centerpieces by Blush Botanicals worked perfectly with the feel of the room. Everything was better than we could have imagined, as people of all ages were breakin’ it down on the dance floor!

What I’ve always loved about True Photography is the way that color and emotion is captured in each photograph. Because our wedding was in the hands of True Photography and Aaron Feldman, we knew we had nothing to worry about but having fun. I feel so lucky to have these photos to remember the details of our wedding day, and I’m equally proud to be a part of a company that provides that gift to every bride and groom who chooses True Photography.

In order to photograph Jessica and Dan’s November wedding, we headed out to the beautiful islands of Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean. It was important to this lovable couple to make sure that their guests felt connected and comfortable in the tropical surroundings. So Jessica and Dan organized a list of events and activities to entertain guests throughout the day. By the time the couple walked down the aisle, everyone felt like family!

We hope you enjoy the images below. We’ve also included stories from Jessica about her beautiful four-day wedding celebration.

My family has a house in Turks and Caicos, and it’s always been an amazing getaway for me. When Dan and I got engaged, we knew we didn’t want the pressures of a local wedding. It only felt right to head back to Turks, which is where we took our first real vacation together. There’s just something about it that we wanted to share with others.

Day 2 – Four hour snorkel excursion, followed by a rehearsal dinner for all attending guests.

Day 3 – The Big Day!

Our wedding was meant to be a fun, small, and very casual beach wedding. Everything was on the sand and just a few feet from the ocean, even the dinner tables. We decorated using a lot of natural elements, such as starfish, sea shells and sand.

Destination weddings can be complicated, but what made the difference was that I had a wedding planner. This is a must with destinations! To make sure the event had our signature touch, I pulled together images we liked – from the exact flowers to the setup of the dance floor. We had a few blips, but that’s just how it goes… and you can’t get upset when you are having the time of your life. When it came down to it, it was an easy experience.

If I were to go for a little humor, I would say the most memorable moment was the speedo couple that stood there in the background posing behind our ceremony shots. When I finally saw the couple as we were doing our vows, Dan and I started laughing. Of course, once it registered that they were in our shots, I tried to wave them on, but they weren’t having any of that. The guy in the speedo literally just shrugged his shoulders and gave me a “What?”. Aaron got a great shot of them posing for the camera during our vows. It was pretty hysterical and we all laugh at it still today… Although I still kind of want to punch that guy for staying that long.

I have so many favorite moments… roasting marshmallows, snapping Polaroids, playing limbo, and strumming an air guitar on the dance floor. Dan even split his pants during some goofy dance moves! We had such an amazing time at our wedding. Aaron, along with Jason from Taylor Films, captured the great moments.

I think the one thing that stuck in my mind was that everyone was having a blast. We have friends and family that met through our wedding that still keep in touch today.

It is so hard to choose our favorite photos from the day. I think the one of us holding on to the ceremony canopy and looking at each other is my favorite. The colors are amazing and it looks straight out of a magazine. I also really love the one where I have my arm around my Dad, and Dan and I are clinking glasses. It’s really sweet. Dan’s favorite is the one where we are kissing on the bench.

Our experience with True Photography was perfect. What I wanted out of a photographer was another guest who would get along with everyone, have fun and support us. That’s exactly what I got!

Aaron and Jason….you guys have outdone yourselves….again! Your work is inspiring :)

Jennifer and Brandon’s September wedding played off of the classic and sophisticated feel of The Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe, while incorporating a DIY (Do It Yourself) vintage flair. Jennifer and her sister Jessica had a blast coming up with unique and intricate details for the wedding, which truly was a labor of love! In fact, the the crafty pair of sisters are now planning to launch a decor company / blog called “Linen, Lace, and Love.” We stopped to chat with Jennifer to get the dish on the details, and the special moments that we captured through our lens. Take a look at what she had to say!

I’m shabby-chic, and Brandon is more traditional and clean. So we met in the middle with a “Gingham and Lace” theme.  He’s gingham and I’m lace and we tied it in throughout.  We wanted it to be clean, classic, and beautiful with a little vintage feel thrown in.  The table numbers took three days because we hand stenciled numbers on them, glued doilies, attached buttons up the backs of all of them, and tied them with a gingham bow. The signs were made by my artist sister as a cute way to direct the crowd across the Crosby to the reception.

The Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe is not only beautiful, but it is where my parents live. For many years, The Crosby has felt like a second home.  The location is sentimental to me, as well as breathtaking, so it was an easy choice for our wedding venue.

My favorite moment was when my dad saw me for the first time.  Our photographer had me wait in the dressing room and brought my dad into the lobby.  Then I came out and we both almost started crying.  It was really special.

Brandon’s most memorable moment was when the car pulled up and I stepped out and he saw me for the first time. The car is a 1930 Packard that my dad and his father, Donald Wheeler, restored together.  My grandfather passed away three years ago, and it was our way of including him in the ceremony. The Packard was also in my parents’ wedding, and my sister’s, so it’s become a family tradition.

The scripture on the flowers was from my Auntie Mae, who gave me the page of my favorite Bible verse. The page was pulled out of my Great Aunt’s Bible, which she carried down the aisle when she got married. The passage is Ephesians’ 3:20…The cross necklace wrapped around my bouquet was Brandon’s wedding gift to me, and I now wear it every day.

We also had a “frames” theme – the photos, escort card display, and the flower boxes in the reception were all empty frames. We even gave out frames as a wedding favor. We liked the idea of empty frames symbolizing all of our memories yet to come.

San Diego Wedding Photographer: Wedding had a picture frame theme at The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe

We made the guestbook table by wrapping books with navy paper and then gluing doilies and stamping them with letters. I think it turned out really well. With help from our wedding planners at Amorology and graphic design by Peanut Press, we also created an amazing escort card display. Our original concept was to do a canopy of ribbon with the escort tags woven through the ends that were coming down.  Amorology came up with the giant frame idea and I loved how it tied into our theme.

Our experience with True Photography was GREAT! They were very professional, kind (we have both been in weddings where the photographer was yelling at people the whole time), helpful, and prepared. They totally captured our wedding day. Here are a few of our favorite images for the day:

Love you attention to detail but REALLY love the frame shot and the SPARKLERS!!!!

We had the chance to catch up with one of our beautiful brides whose wedding we photographed this fall near Denver, Colorado. Kristin and her husband Ryan met in the mountains of Colorado, so a wedding tucked away at a private mountain retreat was the ideal place for this couple to tie the knot. Even though the couple now lives in Philadelphia, they look back with fond memories of their chic celebration!

Everyone I have shared our photos with has been blown away. I have received countless comments about the ‘best wedding pictures I’ve ever seen.’ – Kristin, Bride

It actually took me a year to choose Boettcher Mansion as our venue. We wanted to do a small mountain wedding in a rented home, but our families’ guest lists ended up prohibiting that! So finding the same type of feeling with enough room was a huge challenge. To complicate things, I was searching from Philadelphia, and only got to check out venues when I flew home. Boettcher is one of those places that you really don’t get a feel for until you’re standing on the property. As soon as we walked through the archway at the entrance, I loved it.

We were going for rustic elegance with a bohemian flair… if that makes sense!  As a designer in the wedding industry, I was overly aware of all the trends out there. I knew what I did not want. But every day I found new ideas and trends that I loved. It was hard to stay focused on what represented us and not just what was cool. Ryan and I met running ski trips in the mountains of Colorado, so in the end I knew I had to stay true to the environment because that was the most meaningful element.

I am incredibly lucky to have a lot of creative people in my life! Ryan is an audiophile and a very talented guitar player, and I wanted elements in the party that represented him. I also wanted a cool alternative to the traditional guestbook. That’s where the guitar and canvases come in. We found a cool acoustic on Craigslist for people to autograph, and I set up canvases for guests to paint on. The guitar is awesome. The end vision is to hang the canvases and guitar together on a wall in our upstairs studio.

The lightning shots in the meadow rock! Standing in the open with a metal umbrella was a little scary while that thunderstorm rolled in. But NOBODY has a wedding picture like that. It was worth the risk of electrocution! Haha!

My father is incredibly handy – he’s a carpenter in his free time. I saw some basic aspen candle holders on Etsy, and I knew they would be perfect for our reception. I showed the idea to Dad, and he took it from there. It was his idea to cut trunks in half vertically and lay them flat.  I’ve suggested to Dad that he ought to open up his own little Etsy shop selling the candle holders! Maybe a nice side job when he retires. I also have to give major props to my florist and friend, Michael Ann Austin… I loved how creative she was with elements like the purple artichokes and the fiddlehead ferns. She opened my eyes to just how expansive the world of flowers is!

San Diego Wedding Photographers: Mountain themed wedding with wood tree trunk centerpieces and candle holders. Unique flowers with Billy Balls

I design stationery, so it was basically my opportunity to show off. I spent a weekend holed up in my studio illustrating all the elements, but it took me weeks to finalize it all. The invitation cards were printed on aspen wood. There’s a great company, Cards of Wood, that did this for me. I highly recommend them. The rest of the stationery was printed on bamboo, a very eco-friendly material to print on because bamboo grows like crazy.

Hands down, the shots of Ryan and I posing in front of the red door are my favorite photos. There are eight or nine of them, I think, and we love all of them! Aaron gave us a pair of sunglasses and basically just told us to vogue. We did it separately, so I had no idea how Ryan’s would come out, and vice versa. HILARIOUS. And awesome. Two of those are getting printed and hung side-by-side in our house. Big, like concert posters.

The string lights were a slight obsession of mine. If there was any area I became bridezilla over, it was the lights. Amazing how expensive it can be to string those little guys up!  I wanted to create a liveable space outside and not just have guests feel like they were sitting on a patio…The lights did the trick, and connected the indoor dancing to the outside patio. Plus, the photos with the string lights came out amazing!  I love the pictures of us twirling around in the forest… little do people know we were a couple drinks in at that point, and spinning around without eating a tree trunk was not easy!

I’m honestly so thrilled with our wedding pictures. I want to have another reason to hire True Photography… maybe an anniversary session? Thirtieth birthday party? If my actual life was as colorful as our wedding pictures, it would be a dream!

We photographed Kelsey and Kyle’s engagement shoot in Pacific Beach back in June, and ever since we’ve been excited for this fun and energetic couple to tie the knot!  Their Temecula wine country wedding was full of brightly colored Gerber Daisies, clever wine themed escort cards, and plenty of their own unique flair!  With Kelsey being a competitive cheerleading coach, and Kyle, an avid skateboarder, there’s no doubt where the “cheery” but “laid back” vibe came from.  Kelsey shared with us a few details from their celebration at Lake Oak Meadows private estate and winery. Check it out!

All outdoors, beautiful flowers and thriving landscape, lots of space for guests to roam –  the venue was ours for the entire day!  No other parties or onlookers that you usually get with the other wineries.  Temecula isn’t far from my hometown of San Diego, but far enough to make it a retreat, and I love wine!  Most of all, the fire pits and heaters, ambient lighting (candles, twinkle, paper lanterns, etc), and a variety of flowers,  it reminds me of my parent’s backyard, but can fit hundreds of people!

San Diego Wedding Photography: Paper lanterns, candles, firepits and nature at Lake Oak Meadows Winnery in Temecula, California

My two favorite shots of Kyle and I are our first dance when we’re grinning ear to ear and look so ecstatic and in love, and the one where he’s kneeling and kissing my hand – it shows my typical sass!

Since the men’s attire wasn’t the typical suit or tux I figured the boutonniere shouldn’t be typical either.  We used mini skateboards instead!  Looped ribbon as the leaves were topped off with the skateboard wheels as flower buds.

San Diego Wedding Photographers: Laid back wedding with skateboard boutonnières and black and white checkered ties

The vibe was  fun, laid back, “cheery” and unexpected, just like me.  It wasn’t so much a wedding reception I wanted to have, but a typical “Rahn party!”.  When I heard guests saying the event was “totally you!”, I knew I had done it right!

San Diego Wedding Photographer: Laid back and cheery wedding at Lake Oak Meadows private estate and winery

Just before the ceremony began, the guests were greeted and asked to choose a beverage of their choice for the pre-ceremony toast to my father, Ted, who passed away just about a year ago.  He made the most amazing margaritas, which we call Ted-aritas, and we all know of his love for Jimmy Buffet tunes.  The toast happened at exactly 5 o’clock, because it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere!  This photo shows my two sisters/matrons of honor, my mom and myself during the toast just after they finished walking me down the aisle to give me away – ALL 3 of them, with the help of my dad from above too!

San Diego Wedding Photography: Toast for father before the ceremony at Lake Oak Meadows private estate and winery wedding

I needed a fun entrance and this I what I thought of.  My sister and I had a teal 57 Chevy Barbie car when we were younger and that is what I envisioned.  The cars turned out perfect and every male at the wedding couldn’t stop talking about them. My mom always made the team banner for my softball teams when I was younger, so when I had the idea of my two nieces carrying a “here comes the bride” sign down the aisle she immediately started the process.  We took it one step further and had a second banner rolled up behind the first that was revealed at the end of the ceremony…it said “Mr. & Mrs. Varonfakis!”.

I’ve grown up spending my summer vacation at my favorite spot in the world – Balboa Island.  They have an ice cream treat called a Balboa Bar, which is chocolate dipped ice cream on a stick coated with your choice of topping.  I wasn’t going to have a cake in the first place so this was a perfect idea as dessert, and reminds me of those vacations growing up!

San Diego Wedding Photography: Wedding dessert of old fashioned hand dipped ice cream at Temecula Winery Wedding

There are so many wine labels out there and I thought it’d be fun to give each table an unusual or quirky wine label in place of the typical table numbers.  I matched the labels to the people sitting at that table too, it was great.  Mine & Kyle’s was “Monogamy”, very fitting!  A few other examples…“Jargon!”, “Barefoot”, “Insatiable” and “It’s a Headsnapper”. The ladder display came straight from a favorite store – Pottery Barn.  We took the idea and ran with it. It came out even more spectacular than I thought.

Our experience with True was amazing!  From the engagement shoot to planning the timeline of the big day it went smooth and painless.  After seeing my engagement pictures I knew the wedding shots would be absolutely stunning, and they are!  Every member of the True staff I have dealt with has been welcoming and helpful and had a genuine interest in our event.  I’ve already told girlfriends to go to True for their upcoming weddings!
