A Wedding Album: The modern day heirloom

By, June 03, 2011
Like an antique broach or a vintage pocket watch, a photo album is a keepsake to cherish and pass down down through the generations. Those fortunate to have a a wedding album of parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents know how meaningful those images can be today. After your wedding photography is finished, and you have incredible pictures to tell the story of your day, a handmade album with a lifetime guarantee is the best way to show them off!

When we are working with clients to select an album, our rule of thumb is that buying an album is much like buying a piece of furniture. There are different levels of craftsmanship. If you want a table that will stand the test of time, for example, you will want to invest in one that is better made. It’s the same with an album – you’re paying for quality and longevity, with crisp and clear images that hold up over the decades. In 60 years, you’ll want to bring sexy back, and show your great-grandkids how fantastic you looked on your wedding day. A quality album will allow you do just that!

Here are three rules of thumb to keep in mind when you’re getting ready to build an album:

ONE: Select the fewest images needed to tell the story of your wedding. It’s a common misconception that more images lead to a better book. It’s actually the opposite! We advise you to build your album as if you are sharing the highlights with a friend who wasn’t there. Though you may love the individual shots of you with each of your bridesmaids, a better album choice is the best group shot of the whole group of bridesmaids together. Your friend will still experience the same story, and you are able to tell more concisely, with more impact.

TWO: Keep it simple and timeless. When it comes to adding graphics, we suggest keeping it clean. Graphics and elaborate layouts can make a book seem dated when those effects go out like ’80’s hair :) For a stunning presentation that will always be in style, we suggest classic white matte pages, and flush images that bleed off the page.

THREE: Be a little selfish. Of course, you want to have family shots, a picture of your multi-tiered cake, or the centerpieces that you poured your last 24 hours as a single person into making. But at the end of the day, your wedding is about you! Your marriage is what all the celebrating is about, so remember to include plenty of shots of you as a happy couple. It makes for a beautiful book!
