True Photography was thrilled to photograph the wedding of this warm and energetic couple – and an iconic San Diego couple at that!  John Spanos, Director of College Scouting for the San Diego Chargers, and his new wife Jodie, tied the knot at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff.  The day began with an elegant and traditional Greek ceremony, which was followed by a contemporary yet classic black and white celebration at the La Jolla Country Club.  Check out some of the photos we took at this memorable San Diego wedding, including a well-executed choreographed first dance, and an impressive performance of “the worm” during the after party!

John and I are living proof that opposites attract, and so it seemed only natural for our wedding to resemble this.  We loved the sharp contrast of black and white, which also provided a subtle, vintage backdrop.  From there, we used hot pink to add a splash of modern flair.  Old school meets new school, and somehow it works. — Jodie Spanos, Bride

During a Greek Orthodox wedding, there is a ceremony walk, during which the priest holds the Gospel in one hand, and leads the bride and groom in a circle around the altar three times.  This walk signifies the moment when the bride and groom become married.  Our most memorable moment was in Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, when we took our first steps together as husband and wife.

John grew up playing golf at the La Jolla Country Club.  I grew up amidst cornfields in Indiana.  Soon after we began dating, John drove me up the steep, winding entrance of the club to see its ocean view.  I’ll never forget standing in the parking lot, staring at absolute perfection.  Five years later, we tented that exact location, opening the tent’s western wall to the ocean’s view.  Parking lot or not, you can’t mess with perfection.

For over two years, John has been absolutely addicted to the iPhone app Words with Friends, a word game that resembles Scrabble.  In light of his playful obsession, I replicated an iPhone as his Groom’s Cake and created a Words with Friends game on the top.  The cake included all nine groomsmen’s names, the location of our honeymoon (Fiji), and many other words that identified John.  Also, the sides of the cake incorporated John’s other passions: golf, his Greek origin, Wake Forest University, and – of course – Chargers football.

John and I loved our experience with True Photography.  Aaron and his team were a joy to work with and undoubtedly went over and beyond in every way.  We will forever cherish the moments they captured on camera.  I can’t choose just one of my favorites, so here are a few!

This moment shows the finale of our choreographed dance to Frank Sinatra’s Too Marvelous for Words. We had such an incredible time learning the steps, practicing at home, and finally surprising our guests at the reception!  During the entire song, I just focused on John and enjoying the moment.  On that final beat, John dipped me backward (perfectly on cue), and the tent erupted with cheers.  What an unforgettable moment.  I love this photo of us looking past the dance floor and seeing the smiles and enthusiasm of our guests.  Amazing.

This one always makes me smile!

This one has such beautiful color!

John particularly loves the energy and fog in this photo.

There’s something very cinematic about this photo that I love; furthermore, John’s contorted body is absolutely hysterical.  Needless to say, he was a bit sore during the first couple days of our honeymoon .
